Abstract: Due to intensive agriculture, rapid industrialization and anthropogenic activities have caused environmental pollution, land degradation and increased pressure on the natural resources and contributing to their adulteration. Bioremediation is the use of biological organisms to destroy, or reduce the hazardous wastes on a contaminated site. Bioremediation is the most potent management tool to control the environmental pollution and recover contaminated soil. Use of biological materials, coupled to other advanced processes is one of the most promising and inexpensive approaches for removing environmental pollutants. Bioremediation technology is a beneficial alternative which leads to degrade of pollutants. This article presents the important biological organisms used in bioremediation technologies.

Abstract: The current investigation was done to assess the bacterial load and detect the presence of indicator bacteria that acquire the spread of feacal contamination of water of river Ganga at Serampore, West Bengal, India. Total of 110 bacterial isolates, 25 feacal coliform, 50 Escherichia coli and Enterobacter sp were isolated from river water. The objective of this study also showed the antibiotic resistivity of the different isolates. This result showed the notable presence of indicator coliform bacteria in the water and need for conventional treatment of water.

Abstract: A qualitative and quantitative study of indoor air in a hospital at Kalyani, West Bengal, India was carried out. For the enumeration of bacteria and fungi, samples were collected using the settle plate method. This study focuses to assess the microbial population of indoor air of different wards of the hospital and in different sampling time. The highest bacterial and fungal population was recorded in the evening time between 5 pm and 6 pm compared to the morning. The microbial flora isolated included four genera each of bacteria and fungi among which are Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella sp, Aspergillus sp, Fusarium sp, Penicillium sp and Candida sp. The occurrence of microorganisms was highest in the general and female wards and lowest in the operation theatre.
